Google and Apple blocks TikTok in India will hurt Chinese startup

On the 3rd of April, the Madras high court had asked the government to ban TikTok, saying it encouraged pornography and made child users vulnerable to sexual predators.

The Chinese video app will no longer be available on the Google and Apple app stores after the court order which came after an individual launched a public interest litigation calling for a ban.

Tiktok allows its users to create and share short videos with special effects which is hugely popular in India, but some argues that its content is inappropriate. According to a report in TOI, Tiktok had been downloaded over 240 million times in India and over 30 million users installed the app in the January 2019 which is over 12 times compared to the previous year.

A few are also arguing that this legal action could set a precedent of courts intervening in regulating the content on digital platforms. This may also influence job markets considering the number of people the company is employing and investment plans that company has in India.

Bytedance is a Chinese tech company that creates social and news-reading appshaving most of its usersbase and sales in China. But TikTok has exploded in popularity globally, giving the company a wider range globally than any other Chinese tech company.

Investors have valued the company at $75 billion. The startup has made considerable gains in India, where a clear majority of consumers use phones that run onthe Android software.
